Unity Park: Empowering Youth and Transforming Community
Greenspaces don't just make communities more beautiful. They also empower people and drive connection.
In 2014, students from the Felege Hiywot Center decided to clean up their neighborhood. They made a plan and began working with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to coordinate volunteers, pursue funding and transform a once overgrown and neglected plot of land into a beautiful community space. In the process, the youth and adults from the neighborhood started working together and dreaming big.
Founder and executive director of Felege Hiywot Center Aster Bekele shares more about Unity Park, the relationship with KIB, and the ongoing partnership to maintain the space and make Indy cleaner and greener for everyone.

The Power of Trees
Переглядів 2421 годину тому
Have you ever noticed how a walk on a hot summer day can be uncomfortable due to the lack of trees? Trees act as natural air conditioners, with each young, healthy tree providing the cooling effect of ten room-size air conditioners running 20 hours a day. Last year, KIB planted over 3,500 trees, equivalent to 35,000 air conditioners, helping to make Indianapolis cooler, cleaner, and greener, bu...

Well done! I love the work that KIB does in our city!
Love this video. My gift to you. hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/documents/BMP-container-production.pdf
Alhamdulillah!!! May these trees flourish and may our understanding and patience with each other only increase as we watch the trees grow together. 🫲❤🫱
🍀
Great skillful job! Thank you!
Inspiring.
These niggas know their shit.
This was the most helpful video I've watched. I couldn't believe that you had to cut that huge root, however, it was clear that it was growing in a circle. Did you use your saw to shave the entire circumferance of the sides? The video only showed you doing this to one side, although I assume you did it to the whole thing. Lastly, I was surprised at how high I need to plant. I am doing a serviceberry bush. Do the same principles apply? Thank you.
Good day, do you have a video on how to split/divide the amsonia hubrichtii like the one that you just dug up in the above video? I have some that could use some dividing. thank you.
LOVE IT!!! Smart!
Is there anyway we can get more such educational / infirmational vedios?

I've just watched about a dozen planting videos after reading Forest Service and Extension planting guides. Many miss the excavation of the top of the potted tree or are too long. This video is concise and correct! The tree seems to be planted a little high, but it will settle. Better high than low! Thank you. Great video.
I need that burlap bag for a new shirt if that’s OK with you 🤓🧐🤨
This is an educational video and it would be interesting to know what if soil needs treatment when is full of sand and I thought 💭 good drainage is needed to avoid root rod. Thank you for sharing
What about planting in a hard clay soil, planting fruit tree this way will kill the tree? What about the graph tree, where is the curve graph side facing? North or south? Thx for sharing.
Best instructional video, thanks so much!
No compost, amendments?
you can, just mix it in with the native soil
hort.ifas.ufl.edu/woody/documents/BMP-container-production.pdf
Excellent information, clearly presented. Very helpful. Thanks.
Correct way to handle and position the new tree is by the root ball and not the trunk to prevent damage to root system. This tree is man handled by the trunk and carelessly thrown / bounced around throughout the video.
THanks so much for the video. Have my first independent tree planting job tomorrow
Good video 😌
whaoooo nice video. very good. i hope it finds a lot of people who want to plant trees. trees are the future of our children.
What about being careful to not bury the crown of the plant? 2nd, I have been taught here in California to not disturb the root ball unless it is a bit pot-bound, in which case we carefully scratch the surface, not cut into it. 3rd, we are taught to save as much topsoil as possible when removing grass. Do these principles not apply in Indiana? You forgot to mention which way is North here but I assume you want to line up the tall plants East to West so they do not shade the smaller ones - I am assuming all sun-loving plants. I have purchased a 17+ acre homestead and will only plant natives and appreciate anything I can find on this topic. Thank goodness for UA-cam and thank you for posting this video. And thank you Indiana for passing that law against the sale of invasives! Finally, just one of us at a time, we may have the chance to save the world because we must Bring Nature Home: there is no place left for it otherwise.
Rich conversation! Thank you
Nice
How about clean and dry paper towels....trash or recycling?
is it time to plant now?
why do you need to take the cap off an empty milk jug? Isn't the cap also recyclable?
Hi Susan! The caps are not always recyclable, so it's best to check with the company you're using. Even if both pieces of any jar/lid combo are recyclable, however, they are frequently different materials or types of plastic, so removing caps helps during the sorting process at the recycling facility. Thanks!
before removing the tree from pot , dig your hole first
Root preparation will reduce the size of the root ball. If you dig the hole first, you risk digging too deeply.
I knew all of this stuff but the one thing I wasn’t sure about was how much you can rip into the rootball without damaging the tree. And it seems like you can take a lot out and it still be good. I can’t believe the tree can take that but hey I guess it can
They survive mice and other underground things eating and digging through them. they good.
The top of the root ball is to be 2-3 inches ABOVE the surrounding grade, not level with it
Patriot Arborist I say level is the best. That’s from doing both ways.
ive been told an inch above
@@Tisy730 I don't care what you have been told.
@@patriotarborist711 good to know!
@@natee2169 Not level because the tree will sink and go below level as the soil compresses and settles.
A lot of so-called tree plant advisers should take lessons from this clip, very good presentation, thanks.
This is how not plant tree
I've never heard Ned so subdued! Thanks for the video, folks!
I'm happy to see this on the eve of our neighborhood tree planting. You might add what to do if the hole has been made too deep. Removing some old tree roots at our sites has probably left one or two holes too deep. We'll refill the holes and stamp the soil down for a solid base at the right depth before setting the tree in.
